Later I realized that familiarity with chord structure and standard progressions comes in very handy when hanging out with accomplished players and in that sense the theory made the music-making more enjoyable for me. Today I rely largely on my ear to learn or create new stuff, but the basic knowledge of theory continues to be a great foundation for the enjoyment factor. The artIcle talk so much about the importance of this “burning desire” but leaves out the most important questions. “Where do I go from here/how do I use what I know to be great?” We all know the best artists are those who create from their own but at some point isn’t imitation a crucial part of practice? I wish this article went a little further on the subject. It proved a great read but it felt as if there’s so much more to ponder and learn about this. What is generally studied and called music theory is fact, not theory. Learning what notes comprise a chord, chord progressions, how to harmonize, figured basses, etc. is all regarded as music theory, but fact, not theory. Where the theory of music comes in, is when regarding the psychological effect of chords, melodic sequences, etc. on individual listeners. I may enjoy dissonance and you may not. A certain chord progression may make me feel sad, whereas, it may make you feel a totally different way. Why that is so, is theory. It may have a certain effect most of the time, and learning how to effect listeners a certain way is theory. It may work a certain way most of the time and learning the rules is theory. But there are no set rules that work or don't work all of the time, and no one knows at the neurological level why this is true.

But the misnomer of calling music theory thusly, when, in fact, it's just the rules and language of music, scares a lot of people away from learning to read music, understand chord structure, etc.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8935969154275835800.post-35659798056401254082016-08-16T00:47:17.462-07:002016-08-16T00:47:17.462-07:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16361945732030860327noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8935969154275835800.post-68492725368653021872015-08-14T00:30:14.453-07:002015-08-14T00:30:14.453-07:00True to the fire. Ever notice someone struggling to keep a guitar in tune. One holds the guitar neck your has the shape similar to a tuning fork. Visualize this as you play focus the energy between fingers and thumb. You can get tone through this unique to you. Larry Carlton once answered an interview of his sound saying "It's the way I touch my guitar that makes me sound like me". If someone's frequency is off it reflects the output everything sounds off.
